Abstract
Increasing the process scale of promising biomaterials and biochemicals to produce kilograms of material is essential for advancing non-pharma, non-food, biomaterials R&D, but accessing facilities willing to handle promising non-traditional biomaterials can be a challenge. This contribution details the technical elements, decisions, lessons learned, and best practices established by DEVCOM CBC team members during the design, build, setup, and commissioning of the DEVCOM CBC Pilot-Scale Biomanufacturing Facility expansion to produce and recover liquid biochemical products. While the DEVCOM CBC team has decades of pilot-scale experience with the production of traditional microbial biomass and organism-derived solid biomaterials, these lessons-learned and best practices resulted from the first implementation of a biochemical liquid products-focused pilot-scale biochemical production facility within the DOD. The DEVCOM CBC facility implementation process took place over approximately four years, including facility preparation, equipment purchasing, operator training, and standard operating procedure (SOP) development. These lessons-learned address room requirements, safety considerations, equipment operation, materials and process parameters, technology transfer and data package requirements, data analysis and post-processing, waste collection system and disposal practices, and cost factors.
